Colby, Kansas, considered the “OASIS ON THE PLAINS” and the county seat of Thomas County is a charming community located on I-70 approximately 53 miles from the Colorado Border.  The city’s pool, built in the 1930’s under the Workers Progress Administration (WPA) was in need of an upgrade  Construction began on a virgin site, previously a wheat field, in late summer and was completed by the following swim season.

The Aquatic Park consists of a 7,838 sq. ft. leisure pool with a lazy river, zero depth entry, floatable walk area, family slide, speed slide, flume slide and water slide splash down area.  There is a separate 4,844 sq. ft. 8 lane competition lap pool with a 1 meter and a 3 meter diving board.  Both bodies of water have cast-in place floors and gunite walls. 

The bathhouse and filter building are one structure that is 5,400 sq. ft. The bathhouse side includes the entry control station, men’s and women’s restrooms, family changing room, concession area, office area and lifeguard station. The filter side includes the filter room, backwash and balancing tank for the pools, the pool boiler room for heating the pools, electrical room, and chemical storage and processing room. 

This project won the 2011 ABC Award for Excellence in Construction and the Kansas Ready Mixed Concrete Association 2011 Municipal Concrete Award.
